Jena: Schlegelsberg bus turnaround to be upgraded starting in 2027

Jena. The bus turnaround at Schlegelsberg in the Wenigenjena district will undergo a comprehensive renovation starting in the spring of 2027. During its session on September 30, 2026, the city council confirmed the necessary financial resources to advance this significant infrastructure project.

  • Event: Comprehensive upgrade of the Schlegelsberg bus turnaround
  • Schedule: Construction begins in March 2027, completion by autumn 2027 (overall measures until the end of 2029)
  • Location: Schlegelsberg / Berthold-Delbrück-Straße, Wenigenjena, Jena
  • Project Partners: City of Jena, Zweckverband JenaWasser, Stadtwerke Jena Netze, Kommunalservice Jena

The measure aims not only to address structural deficiencies of the entire facility but, above all, to redesign the bus stop to be fully barrier-free. This will improve conditions for all passengers and facilitate access to public transport in the neighborhood.

Long-term traffic planning and bundling of construction projects

A central aspect of the planning in Wenigenjena is the close coordination between the City of Jena, Stadtwerke Jena Netze, and the Zweckverband JenaWasser. Beyond the mere renewal of the turnaround, comprehensive pipeline and road construction work is planned for the upper part of Berthold-Delbrück-Straße up to Eugen-Diederichs-Straße. In 2025, work began in the lower section of Berthold-Delbrück-Straße to replace a prone-to-failure drinking water pipeline to prevent recurring pipe bursts. Further expansion in the eastern part of the street is planned in several construction phases until the end of 2029 to minimize restrictions for residents despite the limited space.

Reallocation of funding for the start in 2027

Originally, the administration had applied for subsidies from the Free State of Thuringia, which were not considered for the 2027 funding program. To secure the construction resolution and maintain the tight schedule with utility providers, 800,000 euros will be transferred from the “Leo-Sachse-Straße” investment project to the project account for bus stops of the Kommunalservice Jena. The expansion of Leo-Sachse-Straße itself will not be abandoned, but is expected to be postponed to 2028 and 2029 after coordination, when the utility lines there are also due for renewal.

Background: Coordination of underground and local transport

Complex civil engineering in established neighborhoods like Wenigenjena requires precise coordination between municipal road construction, sewage, drinking water, as well as electricity and gas supply. By simultaneously renewing pipelines and surface infrastructure, such as the new transformer station of Stadtwerke Jena Netze, recurring construction sites and long-term burdens for commuters and residents are effectively reduced. The adjustment of bus routes, particularly line 14, will also be closely monitored during the individual construction phases.
