Jena (12.02.2026) – The busy commuter route between Leipzig and Jena became the scene of a crime on Wednesday, which was quickly resolved thanks to rapid investigative work and modern surveillance technology.

A Moment of Inattention

For many commuters and travelers, the train journey is a welcome opportunity to switch off or take a short nap. This exact situation proved unfortunate for a 28-year-old woman on Wednesday. On the journey from Leipzig Hbf towards the Saalestadt, she had placed her backpack and another bag on the empty seat next to her.

While the traveler was briefly asleep, a perpetrator took advantage of the opportunity and stole the luggage unnoticed. It was only when the woman noticed the items were missing that she contacted the Bundespolizei. Such thefts, often referred to as “crimes of opportunity,” frequently occur when perpetrators specifically look for inattentive passengers, particularly shortly before stops, allowing them to exit the train quickly.

Rapid Identification at Bahnhof Paradies

After the theft was reported, officers from the Bundespolizeiinspektion Erfurt responded immediately. A decisive advantage in this case was the video surveillance at the Jena-Paradies stop. While reviewing the footage, investigators noticed a man behaving suspiciously: he left the train in question extremely hectically and was conspicuously hiding an object under his jacket.

Thanks to the description of the individual and excellent cooperation with the Jena police forces, the suspect was located and checked in the vicinity of the station. The individual is a 24-year-old Italian citizen.

Evidence Secured – Loot Partially Missing

During the search of the man, officers did not find the complete stolen property, but they did find a crucial piece of evidence: a document that could be clearly assigned to the 28-year-old victim. This significantly strengthened the initial suspicion against the man. The backpack and the bag itself have not yet been found; it is possible that the perpetrator had already disposed of these items or deposited them in another location.

Criminal proceedings have now been initiated against the 24-year-old on suspicion of theft.

Prevention: How to Protect Yourself on the Train

The Bundespolizei is using this case as an opportunity to once again urge greater caution in rail traffic. Especially on busy routes like those in the Saaletal, valuables should never be left out of sight. The following tips help to thwart thieves:

  • Physical contact with luggage: Keep bags firmly gripped even while sleeping, or use the strap to loop it around your arm or leg.
  • Separate valuables: Carry wallets, smartphones, and important documents directly on your person (inner pockets), not in a backpack on the neighboring seat.
  • Vigilance before stops: Be particularly attentive when the train enters a station, as perpetrators use these phases to escape.

Investigations into the whereabouts of the remaining items are ongoing. Anyone who made suspicious observations in the area of Bahnhof Paradies on Wednesday or found abandoned bags should contact the police.
