Hummelshain/Jena (11.02.2026) – News reaching us from nearby Hummelshain evokes both hope and concern. The “Neues Schloss,” often described as one of the most significant examples of Historicism in Thuringia, is currently the focus of extensive preservation efforts. While an important step toward aesthetic restoration is being taken on the facade, nature has caused a bitter setback in the palace park.

Restoration of the Stone Guardians

Visitors approaching the imposing portico of the Neues Schloss will soon witness fine craftsmanship. The life-sized heraldic animals—majestic lions and bears that have long flanked the entrance—are undergoing a urgently needed restoration. The passage of time and weathering have taken a heavy toll on the sculptures.

The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz is providing financial assistance to enable the start of the work. Experienced sculptor Sven Offenbächer from Pogez (Mecklenburg) has been commissioned for the task. His work begins with precise moldings of the figures. These steps are essential to authentically secure the fine details of the heraldic symbols and animal bodies for future generations. It is a positive signal for the palace, whose renovation needs have been an important topic in the region for years.

Storm Damage in the Park: Herzogsstein Destroyed

However, the joy over the progress on the main building is dampened by an incident in the extensive palace park. In the area of the “Hirschgruppe” monument, a fallen tree has caused massive damage. Particularly tragic: the so-called Herzogsstein was completely destroyed in the process.

The stone, which commemorates Herzog Ernst I., had only recently been extensively restored. Following an inspection, experts have now determined that the historical original can no longer be saved—the stone is irreparably broken. The only solution is the creation of a true-to-original copy to complete the monument ensemble once again. This presents the support association (Förderverein), which cares for the grounds with great dedication, with new financial challenges.

Donation Campaign for the Anniversary

To cover the costs of creating the new Herzogsstein, a donation campaign was launched on short notice. The schedule is ambitious but symbolically chosen: the new stone is to stand in its traditional place by September 16, 2026. This date marks the 200th anniversary of the palace builder’s birth—a worthy occasion to present the history of the site in impeccable condition.

For monument enthusiasts from Jena and the Saale-Holzland-Kreis, this offers an opportunity to make a direct contribution to the preservation of regional history. Schloss Hummelshain remains a cultural beacon whose preservation is a task for generations.

We will continue to report on the progress of the work.
