The Difference: Emergency Room or On-Call Service?
Before heading out, it is important to choose the right point of contact to avoid overburdening emergency rooms unnecessarily. The Zentrale Notaufnahme (ZNA) at the Universitätsklinikum Jena is primarily intended for life-threatening emergencies. This includes suspected heart attacks, strokes, severe shortness of breath, or massive injuries following accidents.
For all other urgent medical cases that would normally be treated by a family doctor (e.g., flu-like infections, gastrointestinal illnesses, minor cuts), the Kassenärztlicher Bereitschaftsdienst (On-call Medical Service) is responsible. This service can be reached nationwide via the toll-free number 116 117. In Jena and the surrounding area, there are also fixed on-call practices that can be visited without a prior appointment.
On-Call Practices in Jena and the Region

Outside of regular shop opening hours, a statutory emergency service fee of 2.50 euros usually applies. It is recommended to have cash on hand, as not all night-service windows accept card payments.
